October is Children’s Vision Month
Did you know? 80% of learning in the classroom, especially during elementary years, is visual.
If your child is suffering from a vision problem or impairment, they may be missing important concepts. October is Children’s Vision Month and at Beyond Vision, we’re proud to provide comprehensive eye exams for every age.
If vision problems go undetected, children can fall behind, learning at a slower rate than their classmates. They may begin to experience frustration and withdraw from class discussions. You may even notice changes in their behaviour or instances of acting out. Falling behind early in a child’s educational career can set them back for years to come. Be proactive and keep an eye out for these signs your child may need glasses:
- Constant blinking/eye rubbing
- Squinting or covering one eye
- Avoidance of reading or holding reading materials very close to the face
- Irritability, headaches, nausea
- Poor school performance and/or a decreased attention span
We recommend a child’s first eye exam to be between six and nine months of age and should start yearly eye exams until age 18.
From day-to-day, keep the 20-20-20 rule in mind: Optometrists recommend that when working on a digital screen or watching TV, every 20 minutes, you should give your eyes a 20 second break and focus on something that is not a digital screen at least 20 feet away. Set yourself a timer or use commercial breaks as a chance to try it out.
