A complete eye exam is more than just a sight test
When you visit the eye doctor, it’s very likely that he or she will run you through a series of tests to determine your visual acuity, or in other words, how clearly you can see. This is the typical scenario that many of us recall when we think about our last eye exam – reading letters or numbers from a chart on the wall with a series of different lenses. But did you know that a large number of eye-related diseases and disorders can have little or no symptoms? A complete eye exam with your Optometrist will help guard against more than just blurry vision.
Your Optometrist is trained to perform not only an examination of your external eye health, but also your internal eye health. He or she will check your eyes for abnormalities, which can include early warning signs of diabetes or hypertension.
Your Optometrist will also check for warning signs and indications that glaucoma could be present or could be a potential risk – Tonometry measures the fluid pressure in the eye.
Optometrists can also detect eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, as well as tears in the retina, injury to the eye, bleeding, and even tumours.
